Illinois started out the year on an impressive run, but then ran into some trouble during a tough Big Ten schedule. The Illini were 12-3 through their first 15 games with defeats thanks to Alabama, Northwestern and Tennessee, then took losses to USC, Michigan State, Maryland, Nebraska and Rutgers during their next eight outings. Following wins over Minnesota and UCLA, the Illini fell to Michigan State, Wisconsin and Duke in succession. Illinois bounced back with wins over Iowa, Michigan and Purdue to finish off the regular season, then beat Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament before a blowout loss to Maryland last Friday. The Illini were able to bounce back in their First Round national tournament game versus Xavier though, giving the team a 22-12 overall record through 34 games so far this year.

In their NCAA Tournament First Round matchup versus Xavier on Friday, the Illini held a 40-35 lead going into the second half. Illinois kept it going with a 46-38 run from there and took the win 86-73 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Will Riley with 22 points and four rebounds. Tomislav Ivisic doubled up on 20 points with 10 boards and two blocks, as did Kasparas Jakucionis with 16 points and 10 assists (and six turnovers). Kylan Boswell chipped in 15 points with five rebounds and two assists, and the top bench scorer was Morez Johnson with six points and five boards in 12 minutes of work during the victory effort.

Kentucky Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Kentucky side, they followed a similar path this year with a nice start followed by a bit of a choppy run in difficult conference matchups. The Wildcats posted a 14-3 run in their first 17 games, falling to only Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia during that time. Kentucky lost four of the next five outings versus Alabama, Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Ole Miss, then beat South Carolina and Tennessee in the next pair. A 2-3 run came next featuring losses to Texas, Alabama and Auburn, then a pair of wins to finish off the regular season over LSU and Missouri. Kentucky beat Oklahoma in a close finish during their first game of the conference tournament, but fell in a 29-point deficit to Alabama last Friday. Kentucky came back for a First Round victory over Troy though, giving the team a 23-11 overall record so far this year.

In the Troy matchup, the Wildcats didn’t have too many issues. Kentucky was up 35-27 at the end of the first half, then hit a 41-30 run the rest of the way. The result was a 76-57 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Otega Oweh with 20 points, eight boards and six assists alongside two steals. Koby Brea added 13 points with four assists and two boards, while Andrew Carr had 13 points with three assists, three blocks and two rebounds. Leading the team in bench scoring was Brandon Garrison with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in 16 minutes on the floor during the win.

Kentucky vs Illinois Prediction

I’m going to stay with Kentucky. You could probably call this one either way, though. It’ll be a fun game if both teams play to their capabilities. The Wildcats dispatched Troy without a ton of fanfare this week, hitting a nice 47.5 percent from the field with 39 rebounds and 23 team assists. It wasn’t perfect however, as Kentucky missed six of their 16 free throws (62.5 percent) and had 10 turnovers for 11 Trojans points. Still, it was a pretty nice all-around effort. The Wildcats have been on a great scoring run pretty much all year, with 69 or more points in 22 straight outings.

As for Illinois, they’re 5-1 in their last six with 81 or more points in each win. On paper this looks like a completive game with a high total, so it’ll be a great one to watch.

Xavier Musketeers Betting Preview

The Musketeers had something of a spotty record going from late November into early February but they were able to correct their course toward the end of the regular season. Xavier opened on a 6-0 stretch then lost to Michigan, TCU, Cincinnati, UConn, Marquette, Georgetown and St. John’s over the next 10 games. Losses to St. John’s Creighton and Villanova came in the next eight games alongside wins over DePaul, Villanova, Marquette, UConn and Georgetown. Xavier would take out Providence, DePaul, Butler, Seton Hall, Creighton, Butler and Providence to finish off the regular season before a conference tournament loss to Marquette and a First Four win over Texas. That gives the Musketeers a 21-11 overall record though 32 games.

In Wednesday’s NCAA Tournament matchup versus Texas, the Musketeers were in trouble at the break with a 47-39 deficit. Xavier stormed back with a 47-33 second half to take the eventual victory 86-80 in dramatic fashion. Leading the team in scoring was Marcus Foster with 22 points and eight rebounds alongside two assists in 31 minutes of work.

Over on the Illinois side, they were looking pretty good in mid-January before hitting a choppy run amid some tough Big Ten games. The Illini opened up on a 12-3 run, then lost four of the next six games versus USC, Michigan State, Maryland and Nebraska (with wins over Indiana and Northwestern). A 3-1 stretch came next featuring wins over Ohio State, Minnesota and UCLA, then losses to Michigan State, Wisconsin and Duke. Illinois beat Iowa, Michigan and Purdue to finish off the regular season, then took out Iowa in Big Ten Tournament action before falling to Maryland. That gives Illinois a 21-12 record through 33 games this year so far.

Matched up against Maryland last Friday, the Illini were pummeled 57-31 in the first half. Illinois got a little better from there on a 34-31 run in an eventual blowout loss 88-65. Kasparas Jakucionis doubled up with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Will Riley added 15 points and seven rebounds. Kylan Boswell put up 14 points with three rebounds and one assist, and Morez Johnson led the bench scoring on six points with nine boards in 28 minutes.

I’ll lean slightly toward Illinois here, but it’s something of a coin flip. The Illini were demolished by a dangerous Maryland team in their Big Ten Tournament matchup, shooting just 36.5 percent from the field and 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from outside. Illinois coughed up 17 turnovers for 22 Terrapins points along the way and had exactly zero fast break points and zero points off turnovers. The good news for the Illini is that they had been playing well prior to that with 81 or more points in four straight wins. Illinois just needs to shake off the bad loss and get back to business in the national tournament.

As for Xavier, they overcame a slow first half in the win over Texas and eventually shot a nice 55.2 percent from the field with 48 percent (12-of-25) from 3-point range and just seven turnovers. The Musketeers weren’t great from the line though (10-of-16 for 62.5 percent) and had a 33-28 rebounding deficit. Xavier is on quite a scoring tear these days, with 73 or more points in nine straight games—an 8-1 run overall. This one’s probably going to be a fairly high total, but I think the Illini can power it out if they hit the gas early on offense.

Maryland has had the better season and is on a heater right now, with wins in eight of its last 10 games while covering seven of those games. Maryland also has the rest advantage, so it’s no wonder why oddsmakers are giving the Terps the edge. However, Illinois is a talented team and hard to turn down in the underdog role.

When Illinois is scoring the way it has recently, this team is capable of beating any in the Big Ten. Also, this is a revenge spot after Illinois got clapped by Maryland in the only meeting this season at home, losing 91-70. I’m sure this Illinois team hasn’t forgotten that game and is thrilled for a chance at get back. Expect a fun, high scoring game. I want the bucket with Illinois.

If those shots continue to fall, Illinois will have a battle on its hands. We’ve also seen Illinois drop three of its last six games, while struggling defensively. This is a lot of free buckets for a Hawkeyes team that doesn’t need help scoring. Give me Iowa and the points on Thursday.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

Purdue got off to a strong start this year with seven wins in eight games (featuring a lone loss to Marquette). The Boilermakers would lose three of four in December though, falling to Penn State, Texas A&M and Auburn. In the next 12 outings Purdue would go 11-1 with a lone loss to Ohio State. Otherwise the wins came courtesy of Toledo, Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers, Nebraska, Washington, Oregon, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and USC during that time. After four straight losses to Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Indiana, the Boilermakers have since beaten UCLA and Rutgers in consecutive games. That gives Purdue a 21-9 record across their first 30 games of the season.

In the Rutgers matchup on Tuesday, the Boilermakers were up 50-41 by the break. Purdue scored another 50 points in the second half for an even 100-71 victory in the end. Topping the scorers were Braden Smith (five rebounds; nine assists; two steals) and Fletcher Loyer (two rebounds; three assists), each with 23 points. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 16 points with eight boards, three assists and one steal in 26 minutes. Topping the bench contributors was Gicarri Harris with his 11 points, three rebounds and one steal in 17 minutes of action on the floor.

Both Kasparas Jakucionis (six rebounds; four assists) and Kylan Boswell (nine rebounds; four assists) scored 17 points each, while Will Riley chipped in 13 points with four rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes of action on the floor during the victory effort.

Illinois vs Purdue Prediction

I’ll stay with Purdue, but you could make a case the other way as well. The Boilermakers didn’t have too many issues with a middling (but tricky) Rutgers team in their last outing, shooting 56.1 percent from the field with a 40-26 rebounding advantage and 20 points off nine Knights turnovers. Purdue has scored 76 or more points in consecutive games, which follows a couple of down outings on the road versus Michigan State and Indiana (124 combined points).

As for Illinois, they played an inspired second half of basketball in their upset road win over a great Michigan squad. The Illini shot 46.6 percent from the floor overall and had a 43-32 edge on the boards. Illinois also got 15 points off 11 Michigan turnovers along the way. The Illini have won consecutive games with a combined 174 points scored, so this one could end up being a high total. In the end I like Purdue to assert themselves and power it out, but it’ll be a great matchup to watch.

The Illini kicked things off with a 12-3 run, taking out Eastern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Oakland, MD Eastern Shore, Little Rock, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Missouri, Chicago State, Oregon, Washington and Penn State in that time. A 5-5 run came next with wins over Indiana, Northwestern, Ohio State, Minnesota and UCLA among losses to USC, Michigan State, Maryland, Nebraska and Rutgers. After three straight losses to Michigan State, Wisconsin and Duke, Illinois finally got another win over Iowa, improving their record to 18-11 overall on the year through 29 games so far.

In the Iowa matchup on Tuesday, Illinois held a seven-point edge going into the second half. The Illini kept it up from there, posting a 44-31 run on the way to an 81-61 victory in the end. Topping the scorers in the home win was Tomislav Ivisic with 22 points, four boards and five assists. Both Kylan Boswell (four rebounds; seven assists) and Will Riley (seven rebounds; two assists; two steals) chipped in 15 points apiece, while Tre White added 14 points with two rebounds in 20 minutes on the floor.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview

Over on the Wolverines’ side, they’ve only got a couple of brief runs of spotty play in the books this year. Michigan has otherwise done very well in the record column. The Wolverines opened on an 8-3 stretch, taking losses to only Wake Forest, Arkansas and Oklahoma during that time. After wins over Fort Wayne, Western Kentucky, USC, UCLA and Washington in the next five, Michigan lost to Minnesota and Purdue around a win over Northwestern. It’s been an 8-1 run since then with a loss to Michigan State among wins over Penn State, Rutgers, Oregon, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Nebraska and Rutgers. That gives the Wolverines a 22-6 record across the first 28 games of the 2024-25 campaign.

Matched up against Rutgers on Thursday, the Wolverines were outscored 57-49 in the first half. Michigan woke up from there on a 35-25 run and powered out the comeback win at home 84-82. Vladislav Goldin led the team on a double-double with 22 points, 11 boards, two assists and two blocks. Nimari Burnett added 20 points with four rebounds and two assists, while top bench scorer Will Tschetter had 16 points with one rebound in 18 minutes of action.

Michigan vs Illinois Prediction

I’m going to try Illinois here, but you could make a good argument the other way–especially with the relatively thin line. The Illini finally got a much-needed win over a middling Iowa team in their last outing, shooting 50.8 percent from the field with just five turnovers along the way. Illinois got outmuscled on the boards 36-31, but also scored 17 points off 16 Hawkeyes turnovers. The Illini had given up 74 or more points in 11 straight games prior to that, so if they return to form on Sunday Illinois could be in trouble.

As for Michigan, they started slowly versus Rutgers and played a sloppy game overall with 14 turnovers for 16 Knights points. The Wolverines shot 53.7 percent from the field but also hit a tepid 65.6 percent (21-of-32) from the line and 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from outside. Still, it was a nice points total (84) after finishing below 63 points in consecutive games. Depending on how things shake out here, Michigan could easily control things the whole way. That said, if Illinois plays to their capabilities—and gets off to a fast start like Rutgers did—I can see the Illini hanging in there. It would be nice if the line were a little thicker, though.

I’m backing Illinois here. I am not the biggest fan of Illinois in their current form if I’m being 100% honest, but the Illini here are the better option compared to the alternative. Iowa has been horrendous on the road this season, especially on the defensive end of the floor. I have my concerns about Illinois as well, as word has spread that there’s a sickness going through this team, and it’s why the Illini have looked sluggish in a lot of spots as of late, but I think that Illinois gets through it and takes advantage of a porous Iowa defense. Give me the Illini in this one.

Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview

The Duke Blue Devils (23-3, 16-10 ATS) were on a spectacular run of 16 victories before that winning streak ended with a 77-71 road loss to Clemson. Duke responded with three wins in a row, including the most recent one over Virginia on the road. Duke seems to be navigating smoothly towards securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Duke averages 81.0 PPG (39th) and allows 60.8 PPG (6th). The Blue Devils are 51st in rebounds (38.5) and 37th in assists (16.7). Cooper Flagg leads the team with 19.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.6 SPG, and 1.2 BPG. Kon Knueppel follows him with 13.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, and 2.4 APG, while Tyrese Proctor chips in with 12.0 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 2.2 APG.

The Fighting Illini are 7th in the Big Ten and it seems that this spot is the best they can get before the conference playoffs start.

I am not sure about the spread in this one, so I am going with the total. Even though Duke has an elite defense, which is in the top 10 in the country, I am sure Illinois can cause the Blue Devils a problem or two. Given the Blue Devils are consistent offensively, Illinois’ defense is going to struggle against Cooper Flagg and co.

It’s a neutral-court tilt, so there is no home-court advantage. I expect both offenses to play well and combine for more than 155 points. Illinois has hit Over in 24 of its last 40 games and is 16-11 O/U in this campaign. No doubt Duke will get to an 80-point mark without problems, I am hoping Illinois can score at least 70 to take us to the win.

Illinois Can’t Lose This Game

Illinois, at times, looks like a National Championship contender, and in other games, they are losing to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights like in the last game. At halftime against Rutgers in the last game they were down 37-29 and even though they scored 44 points, it wasn’t enough as they fell short. Will Riley had a strong game putting up 20 points, five assists, and three rebounds, while Ben Humrichos also added 114 points and five rebounds. Two games ago, Ohio State scored 79 points against Illinois, but Illinois scored 87 points, which led to the eight-point victory. 

Illinois comes into this game with a 15-8 record overall and they have gone 11-11-1 against the spread. The over has hit in 12 of the games. Away from home this season, straight up they are 3-4. Illinois is averaging 84.7 points while their defense is giving up 70.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 9th in the league while the defense is ranked 157th. If they can get out to a fast start, and kill the Gophers confidence, they have a great shot in this game.

Minnesota Has Been a Problem

Minnesota has been a problem for opposing teams and although they can’t be trusted all the time, this is a team that might be able to compete with any Big Ten team, depending on who they are playing. In the last game, Minnesota went on the road against Penn State, and they were able to win 69-61. At halftime they were down four points, but in the second half they scored 48 points on the way to the win. Minnesota ended up shooting 53.1 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from behind the three point line.

I think that Rutgers may end up being a two-man show with Harper and Bailey, but this Rutgers team has been able to keep themselves in a lot of games that maybe you wouldn’t expect them to be able to keep close. I’ll take a shot on Rutgers with the points in this one.

Maryland Terrapins Betting Preview

The Terrapins are doing quite well this season—all things considered—despite a .500 run over their last half-dozen outings. They’ve still only lost consecutive games once so far. Maryland opened the year on an 11-2 run with losses to Marquette and Purdue. Otherwise, it was wins over Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s, Florida A&M, Canisius, Villanova, Bucknell, Alcorn State, and Ohio State. After three straight wins over St. Francis PA, Syracuse, and Maryland Eastern Shore, the Terrapins lost to Washington and Oregon in consecutive outings. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run though, as Maryland has only fallen to Northwestern in that quartet. Otherwise, the wins were over UCLA, Minnesota, and Nebraska, giving the Terrapins a respectable 14-5 overall record through the first 19 games of the season.

In the Nebraska matchup on Sunday, the Terrapins entered the second half with a 37-35 edge. The Terrapins kept it rolling from there on a 32-31 stretch and ended up winning 69-66 in the end. Tops in scoring was Ja’Kobi Gillespie with 22 points, five assists and four steals. Rodney Rice added 15 points with two rebounds and two assists, while Selton Miguel put up 13 points, three assists, and one rebound in 30 minutes of work on the floor.

Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview

Over on the Illinois side, they’ve had quite a strong season so far in a difficult conference themselves—despite a couple of 1-2 stretches it’s been pretty smooth sailing this year. Illinois went 7-3 in their first 10 games with losses to Alabama, Northwestern, and Tennessee. The Illini otherwise beat Eastern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Oakland, MD Eastern Shore, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Wisconsin in that time. Following a winning streak over Missouri, Chicago State, Oregon, Washington, and Penn State, Illinois hit another one of those 1-2 stretches with a lone win over Indiana. The losses bookending it were versus USC and Michigan State, resulting in a 13-5 record in Illinois’ first 18 games this year.

Matched up against the Spartans in a road game Sunday, Illinois was all tied up 36-36 going into the second half. The Illini were outscored 44-42 the rest of the way, however, resulting in a tough loss of 80-78. Will Riley was the leading team scorer, coming off the bench to contribute 19 points with six boards and two assists in 26 minutes of action. Tomislav Ivisic added 13 points with four rebounds and five assists, while Kylan Boswell had 13 points with four assists, nine rebounds, and five turnovers. Morez Johnson chipped in 11 points and six boards as well.

Illinois vs Maryland Prediction

I’m going to take a stab at Maryland. This should be a fun matchup overall though, and you could certainly argue it the other way. The Terrapins put away a scrappy Nebraska team thanks to 44.8 percent shooting in their last outing, but there were some statistical blemishes involved. Maryland was out-rebounded 36-32, missed five of 12 free throws (58.3 percent), and had 12 turnovers for 14 Cornhuskers points. Still, Maryland continued a solid stretch of scoring; they’ve hit a nice 69 or more points in every game so far this year.

As for Illinois, they fell to a very good Michigan State team in their last matchup, thanks mostly to 10 turnovers, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range and 63 percent (17-of-27) from the line. That makes 69 or more points surrendered in three straight games for Illinois, who is normally a good enough offensive team to keep opponents at bay despite high totals. If Maryland has a hot shooting night in this one, I think the Terrapins keep pace.

Illinois Dominated the Last Game

Illinois has been a bit inconsistent the last couple of weeks but they are coming off a big victory in the last game. Illinois scored 94 points against Indiana while the defense gave up 69 points and that was enough for the win. Kylan Boswell had a strong game putting up 22 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. There were three different players that put up at least 17 points. Two games ago against USC, the offense scored 72 points, but the defense gave up 82 points. 

Illinois is averaging 87.3 points per game while their defense is giving up 67.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 5th in the league while the defense is ranked 68 in the league. They are averaging 65.29 field goals attempted per game which is 7th best in the league. Kasparas Jakucionis is averaging 16.7 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. Illinois will meet Maryland and Northwestern after this game. 

Michigan State Just Keeps Winning

Michigan State just keeps winning games and they have a whole lot of confidence heading into this game. In the last game, Michigan State faced off against Penn State and they scored 90 points on the way to the victory. Michigan State shot 47.1 percent from the field but they still only shot 26.1 percent from behind the three-point line. Jaden Akins had a huge game putting up 16 points, six rebounds, and three assists. 

Michigan State is averaging 81.8 points while their defense is giving up 67.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 40th in the league while the defense is ranked 64th. They are averaging 47.79 from the field which is 53rd in the league. Jaden Akins has been the top player for Michigan State, averaging 14.2 points while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Why Michigan State Will Beat Illinois

Michigan State vs Illinois Prediction 

The big question in this game is which Illinois team going to show up. Will it be the Illinois game that won the last game or the team two games ago that lost by 10 points to USC? I expect it to be a little more like that team against USC. Michigan State is averaging 81. 8 points and they are going to have no issue running up the score. Illinois will have no answer and Michigan State will end up covering the spread.

Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview

The Fighting Illini have remained quite the steady team so far this season, and they’ve managed to avoid consecutive losses. Illinois does have a couple of tough defeats, though. Following a 6-1 opening run with a lone loss to Alabama amid wins over Eastern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Oakland, MD Eastern Shore, Little Rock, and Arkansas, the Illini hit a 1-2 stretch. The lone win in that time was over Wisconsin, sandwiched between losses to Northwestern and Tennessee. The Illini would rebound with wins over Missouri, Chicago State, Oregon, Washington, and Penn State over the next five games, but then took an upset loss at home versus USC over the weekend to drop the team to 12-4 overall on the season thus far.

In the USC matchup on Saturday, the Illini were looking okay after one half with a 38-35 edge. Illinois wilted in the second however, getting outscored 47-34 the rest of the way during an 82-72 loss. Tops in scoring was Ben Humrichous, who notched 15 points and five rebounds during the losing effort. Tre White put up 11 points with four boards and two assists, while Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn had 11 points with two rebounds off the bench in 31 minutes of work. Kylan Boswell chipped in 10 points with eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals as well.

Indiana Hoosiers Betting Preview

Over on the Indiana side, they’ve looked pretty good overall for most of the year themselves—but similarly, they’ve got a couple of bad losses in the books. The Hoosiers hit an 8-2 run over their first 10 games, losing to Louisville and Gonzaga in late November amid wins over SIU Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois, South Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Providence, Sam Houston, Miami OH, and Minnesota. Following a loss to Nebraska, the Hoosiers took out Chattanooga, Winthrop, Rutgers, Penn State, and USC before another loss to Iowa, which gave Indiana a 13-4 overall record through the first 17 games of the season.

Matched up against Iowa on Saturday, the Hoosiers came out of the break looking up at a 43-33 deficit on the scoreboard. Indiana was blitzed 42-27 in the second half, limping to an 85-60 blowout loss. Leading team scorer Myles Rice notched 12 points with five assists, one rebound, and one steal. Oumar Ballo was the only other player in double-figures, notching a double-double on 10 points, 13 rebounds, and one assist in 24 minutes of work on the floor. Both Bryson Tucker and Kanaan Carlyle posted nine points apiece off the bench.

Indiana vs Illinois Prediction

I’m going to stick with Illinois. The Illini could use a good bounce-back effort here, and they’ll need a statistical shot in the arm to get it. In their upset loss to USC over the weekend, Illinois managed to shoot just 37.1 percent from the field and 21.9 percent from 3-point range (7-of-32) while coughing up 15 turnovers for 18 Trojans points. It was one of the Illini’s worst performances of the season—and they did it at home against a team they probably should have handled easily. Still, Illinois has posted 72 or more points in six straight games (a 5-1 run) and should put up a decent total here as well.

As for Indiana, they were quite permissive in their blowout loss to Iowa, giving up 54.2 percent shooting with a 37-31 rebounding deficit and 16 turnovers for 24 Hawkeyes points. The Hoosiers have given up 68 or more points in five straight games, so Illinois should have plenty of room to score here. The Illini need a big win on the road against a rival Hoosiers squad here in order to regain some national respect. I think they’ll get it.

Illinois Has Confidence

Illinois has all kinds of confidence right now and the offense has been elite heading into this game. Illinois in the last game faced off against Penn State and the offense scored 91 points while the defense gave up only 52 points. There were three different players that put up at least 20 points. Tre White ended the game with 20 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Two games ago against Washington, they went on the road and were able to secure the 81-77 victory. 

Illinois is averaging 87.9 points while their defense is giving up 66.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 6th in the league while the defense is ranked 57th. The offense gets the attention but their defense should be talked about more because they have really stepped up. Three games ago against Oregon the offense scored 100 points nad htey are going to need the offense to run up the score here. The big question for the Fighting Illini is the status of their top player Kasparas Jakucionis who is dealing with a forearm injury. If he can’t go, that is a major loss for this squad. 

Why Illinois Will Beat USC

Illinois has won 26 of its last 27 games at State Farm Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.

USC has lost four of its last five day games against AP-ranked opponents.

USC has lost the first half in six of its last seven day games against AP-ranked opponents.

Big Opportunity for USC

This is a big opportunity for USC, which is trying to pick up as many key wins as it can. The problem for USC is they have also lost a lot of key games. In the last game against Indiana, USC scored 69 points but the defense gave up 82 points and that led to the defeat. At halftime, the game was tied 38-38, but in the second half, it got worse, and the game ended up not being all that close. Two games ago, Michigan, USC scored 74 points, and they ended up losing by 11 points. 

USC on the season is averaging 75.7 poits while their defense is giving up 70.4 points per game. The offfense is ranked 170th in the league while the defense is ranked 153rd. As a team they are shooting 46.9 percent from the field and if they want any chance in this game they are going to need to keep hitting those shots. Getting out to a fast start is also going to be a major key. 

Illinois vs USC Prediction

Illinois is going to put on a show here with the offense and even though this is a big opportunity for a key win, USC just doesn’t have the talent to get it done. Ths Illinois offense is balanced and even though and even if their top player, they are still going to find a whole lot of success. Illinois is going to have no issue running up the score and USC won’t be keeping up. Back Illinois to cover the spread here.
