I’m not excited to lay double-digit chalk with a road team, but there’s no other way to go. The Sky looked downright awful in their season opener at both ends of the floor, and now they’re playing an even better team. Home court only does so much. While it’s just one game, the Sky was terrible offensively last season and showed no signs of progress.

The Sky also didn’t show much resistance defensively. The Sky are 0-4 ATS in their last four games as a double-digit underdog, and they’ve lost those games by an average of 21.2 points. I need some more convincing from the Mercury to lay decent sized numbers, especially without one of their best players. The Sparks have played well defensively through and that should be enough to grind out at least a cover. Give me the points.

The Wings showed flashes against the Lynx, and a somewhat competitive game against a top-three team in this league is a positive.

I’d also expect a better effort from Paige Bueckers now that she has a game under her belt. If the Storm played the way they did in their first effort, this is a game the Wings could win. We’re still feeling these teams out. I’ll grab the bucket with the Wings.

Seattle Storm Betting Preview

The Storm won 25 games last season and will enter year five under coach Noelle Quinn. The Storm are as experienced as any team in the league, as there are five players who are at least 30 years old. Skylar Diggins and Nneka Ogwumike are back for another season, while Erica Wheeler and Alysha Clark were added to create this old roster. Gabby Williams will play her first full WNBA season since 2022, and at 28 years old, she’s as decorated overseas as it gets.

The one young player is Dominique Malonga, who Tony Parker compared to Victor Wembanyama, and it will be interesting to see how much she plays her rookie year. Overall, the Storm are a veteran team filled with players who have been there, done that at all levels. We’ll see if that’s enough for the Storm to push the contenders in this league. 

Phoenix Mercury Betting Preview

The Mercury haven’t won a playoff series since winning the title in 2021, and they enter year two under coach Nate Tibbetts. It’s a new era in Phoenix with Diana Taurasi retiring and Brittney Griner going to Atlanta. Kahleah Copper and Natasha Cloud showed enough last season that they’re capable of leading the franchise. The Mercury were also busy by adding Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas, players with a combined seven all-star berths.

The core of this Mercury roster is in their prime, and they have scoring and athletic ability. Copper, Sabally, and Thomas have all been the go-to player on previous teams, so it will be interesting to see how they come together. There’s high upside with this Mercury squad, and they will be a team to watch, as this is the one team that could legit spoil the party for some of the elite contenders.

The Mercury will be without Natasha Mack, Kahleah Copper, Kitija Laksa, and Murjanatu Musa.

I’m high on the Mercury with the additions they made and will be backing them a lot this season. The problem is the Mercury enter the season with a lot of injuries, which includes not having Copper for opening day. A team as experienced as the Storm should be able to take advantage of that. The Mercury are also 1-11 ATS in their last 12 games as an underdog. It’s just not an ideal situation for the Mercury, who are a bit top-heavy, so being down so many players already puts them behind the eight-ball. The line is reasonable. Give me the Storm and the small number.

Chicago Sky Betting Preview

The Sky won 13 games last season and begin the Tyler Marsh coaching era. The Sky have a young core to be excited about in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, a duo that showed flashes of brilliance that led to being on the all-rookie team. The Sky had issues scoring last season, so it was weird not brining back their best scorer in Chennedy Carter.

However, the additions of Ariel Atkins and Courtney Vandersloot could fill the void and is also a shot of experience to a youthful roster. Vandersloot spent her first 12 seasons in Chicago and was a four-time all-star, so her return home should get the fans excited. Atkins has been a double-digit scorer her whole career and has playmaking ability at guard. The Sky should push for a playoff appearance for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Indiana Fever Betting Preview

The Fever won 20 games last season and decided to bring back Stephanie White as head coach. White coached the Fever to a combined 37 wins in 2015-16. On paper the Fever are possibly the most fun team in the league led by superstar Caitlin Clark who has taken the league by storm. There’s also Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, who played their roles in getting the Fever to the playoffs last season.

The additions of Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham, and DeWanna Bonner not only add experience to the roster but do elevate the Fever into contender status. Offensively, the Fever have elite potential and could overwhelm teams most nights. The question remains on the defensive side, as the Fever weren’t great last year. The Fever also has to prove themselves against the top teams to be respected. Again, on paper, the Fever can hang with any team in the league.

The Sky will be without Moriah Jefferson, while Hailey Van Lith is questionable with an ankle injury.

The Fever will be without Sophie Cunningham due to an ankle injury.

Fever vs Sky Prediction

The Fever are going to be favored at home more times than not, and we’re going to get inflated lines due to the public. It’s the Caitlin Clark effect. However, until proven otherwise, the Fever isn’t great defensively, and it’s going to lead to failed covers. In fact, the Fever are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games when favorites of five or more points.

Also, the Sky improved this offseason and will have a more mature team as well. The Sky and Fever played close games last season, and it’s the underdog that’s covered six of the last eight meetings. I get the Fever are the sexy team everybody wants to bet on, but this line is too steep. Give me the Sky and the points.

The Liberty are coming off their first title in franchise history and enter year four under coach Sandy Brondello. The Liberty have made the finals in the last two seasons. The Liberty bring back their big three of Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, which is as good as it gets in the WNBA. The addition of Natasha Cloud should take pressure off of Ionescu to do so much and creates an even scarier offense. Marine Johannes is also back after missing all of last season. The Liberty are probably deeper than they were last season, and the core of their roster is in their prime. It’s not easy to repeat, but the Liberty have the pieces to keep the party going in New York.

Golden State Valkyries Betting Preview

The Valkyries will make their debut as the newest team in the WNBA, and Natalie Nakase is the head coach. It’s going to take time for the Valkyries to build chemistry obviously as they’re starting from scratch and there’s not a go-to player on this team yet. Juste Jocyte was the fifth overall pick and could eventually become the face of the franchise. Tiffany Hayes was recently the sixth woman of the year and was a first-team selection in 2018, but she’s nearly 36 years old. Players like Julie Vanloo, Kayla Thornton, and Monique Billings have experience but have never been asked to lead a team. The Valkyries are a mystery bag for the most part, so I guess time will tell.

I’m not excited to lay this many points with the Sparks in a season opener when they’re not even 100 percent yet. Brink is still out for another month, it looks like. However, the Sparks still have talent and if they’re serious about ending the playoff drought, they win this game.

The Valkyries are breaking new ground, and they could be the league’s punching bag until they figure things out. Again, there’s not a concrete go-to player on this Valkyries roster, and it feels like everybody will be trying to find their role on the fly. Hell, even the coach. The Sparks have to take advantage of that. In fact, it would be time to hit the panic button if they don’t, first game or not. I’ll lay the points with the Sparks.

Players like Diamond Miller or Alissa Pili will be key and should see an expanded role. The Lynx are experienced, talented, and now have a chip on their shoulder with how the finals played out. The Lynx have scary potential.

Dallas Wings Betting Preview

The Wings won nine games last season and begin the Chris Koclanes era. Koclanes is a head coach for the first time at the college or professional ranks. The obvious focus on the Wings is rookie Paige Bueckers, who was a star at UCONN and has superstar potential in the likes of Caitlin Clark. You pair her with four-time all-star Arike Ogunbowale, and the Wings have probably the most talented backcourt in the WNBA when both are cooking.

DiJonai Carrington comes over from the Sun and NaLyssa Smith comes from the Fever, two players who are coming off productive seasons. There’s legit potential for the Wings to go from nine wins to a playoff series winner. The problem is the Wings have an inexperienced coaching staff, and Bueckers is sure to go through growing pains. Still, the Wings will be a team to watch.

If the Lynx are serious about getting back to where they were, they must start the season off strong and win games they’re supposed to win.
